Many driving instructors in the UK are self-employed, running their own businesses. However, some may choose to work with a driving school on a franchise basis, where they might receive support with marketing and booking but will typically have to pay a franchise fee.
ADI stands for Approved Driving Instructor. It refers to instructors who are certified by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in the UK to teach learner drivers. To gain this approval, instructors must pass stringent exams and adhere to high standards of teaching and driving ability.
The time it takes to become a driving instructor can vary. It generally takes most candidates around 12 to 18 months to complete all the training and pass the three-part ADI exam. However, this timeline can be shorter or longer depending on individual circumstances, such as the time available for study and the pace at which one passes the exams.
Yes, as a driving instructor, you will need a suitable vehicle to teach students. The car should be reliable, safe, and fitted with dual controls. Some instructors use their personal cars modified for instruction, while others may lease or buy a car specifically for their driving school business. If you’re associated with a franchise, they might provide a car as part of the agreement.
Our Trainers are former DVSA ADI part 2 & 3 role play trained examiners (Cardington) who conducted the tests that you will be required to sit. You will have a wealth of knowledge available on your journey to becoming a driving instructor.
